Drum holds a special place in Culture and Tradition of the YORUBA .

Drum are found in the Courts of the Yoruba rulers in the homes of the nobility, also drums serve as a mouthpiece to the OBAS 

It interprets our Kings  actions and their body languages , even their reactions to stimuli.

All  Yoruba Orisa deities have their own sacred drums because drums provide the medium through which the orisa devotees are in constant ecstatic Communication and communion with the Orisa ( deities).

AYANGALU FESTIVAL in Ile ife is an amazing Cultural festival that brings together black people from all over the world.

also a festival that brings together  drumers , all ages and Skill levels, it indeed provides a unique experience where drummers, percussionists can share and learn various Skills, even during this amazing festival,Our father;the paramount king of all Yorubas ( OONIRISA ADEYEYE OGUNWUSI ENITAN ) displays his own talent and skills in drumming for the audience.

Africa is proud of this festival and the entire human race is indeed proud of African Drum festival.

The festival included Twenty states in the federation and fourteen foreign countries including Haiti,Cuba,Trinidad and Tobago,Jamaica. etc

Drum festival is enough for us to reminisce about for a long time to come,not only to derive pleasure but to acquiring knowledge about other people’s Culture and tradition. 

The African Drum FESTIVAL is also our own way of promoting and preserving the African Culture. 

Also,this festival is organised to promote the Art and Act of traditional druming as well as to know how we could identify our Drums. 

In  African Culture and tradition,Drum is important and meaningful.even our Royal father’s who are the custodians of our Culture and tradition take drum essential because Drum festival is the way to learn about Drum and the potentials that can be derived from it.

DUNDUN DRUM ; This set of drums used to be one of the royal drums , dùndún pressure drum, double-membrane, hourglass-shaped drum of the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria. It is capable of imitating the tones and glides of the spoken language and is employed by a skilled musician to render ritual praise poetry to a deity or king.

BATA DRUM. BATA is relatively  set of three tapered cylinders of various sizes,which is used during Sango (the god of thunder) festival,initiation ceremonies and offering and invocations 

The set of drum is also used when Sango worshipers want to dance and  perform  magic.

Bata Drum  is Spiritual in such that when it’s being played to appease Sango,alot of miracle happens,during this period sango could be releasing fire through his mouth,performing an acrobat .

3)AGOGO;Agogo is a single or multiple bells used throughout the world but with origins in traditional Yoruba music.

In Orisa spirituality,agogo is commonly used during ifa festivals,offerings,initiation ceremonies etc because is one of the Ifa favourite instruments.

Agogo is also used during the rituals and appeasement of gods .

It’s also serve as the tool in passing information,instructions or warnings to the members of the populace or community. It is commonly used to disseminate information coming directly from the traditional rulers or OBA’S(KINGS) through the ONISE OBA’S (king’s messengers).

4) SEKERE;Sekere is a west African percussion instrument  consisting of gourd with OWO EYO (cowry shells)woven into a net.

 Traditionally,Sekere is an instrument mostly dances by OBA’S (KINGS) it’s  seen in the Yoruba expression” Sekere  loba njo” which means Sekere,a favourite instrument the kings dance).

In Oyo Empire,Sekere is a major musical instrument that Alaafins(Kings lineage) dances.and the players are known as the song’s leaders.its a common belief in Yoruba language that”Sekere ki bawon re ode ibanuje” means  Sekere would not be played where they are mourning.its only played where people are happy.

The Oyo Empire kings over time dances to the tune of Sekere more than other music instruments.

The Sekere players are quite seasoned and knowledgeable of the Yoruba  traditional ,lineage praise,historical and entertainment chants.

THE BEMBE / DJEMBE( aka Jim-bay) is the most popular African hand drum in the world.djembe has its Spiritual aspect in its sounds and Comunity gathering aspect in the learning and playing of its traditional music,thus drum has a large tonal range for a single,fairly simple made  drum,and this lends itself well to many different situations. The DJEMBE came into being in west Africa.and is considered a Mandingo drum .it crossed over into a wide area of West Africa before moving outside of the Continent.

Some main tradition west Africa instrumentation played along with the DJEMBE is doundouns(bass drums)and balafon (Marimba/xylophone).

THE POWERFUL AND MYSTERIOUS IGILA ( ASUNHIN ) TREE

The mysterious tree in our village, Yorubaland; IGI NLA ,It’s also called (IGI ASUHIN ) in Yoruba language.
Yoruba has no proper name for it but a descriptor meaning Igi Nla (Big Tree).
It’s leaves never touch the ground..cobwebs are woven around it’s top where all dead leaves drop. No grass or living things grow under it or within its radius. If any bird touches it, it dies instantly. So also other living things. That’s why no other plant is seen around it.
• It doesn’t brook any nonsense in the forest and even the gods defer to it. (Whatever Sango does to other trees, he dares not touch Igi Nla)
The tree is so rare
It’s outer bark and root are widely used in the preparation of potent charms and medicines.
The wonder behind the sacred tree is that, all the offerings to Igi nla used to be accepted emmediately in such a way that
It will intentionally release out the leaf and part of its outer back for the beneficiary of the Sacrifice ,which the chief priest will tell him/her how to make use of it and it can be used for many purposes.

it’s gotten by approaching the tree from a distance, while a live rooster is thrown at it after series of  incantation.
No human being can survive approaching it ordinarily.

No one dare approach it beyond a certain distance. It talks. And when its help is spiritually sought, it sends an emissary in the form of its fig to accompany the petitioner. This is accompanied by a loud clap of thunderous sound.
In some Yoruba incantations, it’s said that…..Igikigi kii dari so Asorin. Bi Sango ba pa araba, to ba pa Iroko bi ti’gi nla ko…

ANCESTORS CELEBRATION 

ANNUAL IWORI-BOGBE FESTIVAL (ODUN IFA) 2022 AT IFATOKI AMEERE TEMPLE  OYO. 

Discover the events, activities and information about the great Ifa traditional festival known as Odun Ifa.

 Ifa mandates all his  devotees in the ancestors line of spirituality to always make a ceremony for his or her Orisa as recommended from Olodumare 

Ifa festival (aka Odun IFA).

The annual ifa festival is all about, supplications, giving offering,praises and thanksgiving to Olodumare,ORUNMILA and all deities (ORISA ),for the protection and provision of the   Ire of our heart desires , victory and success of all the sacrifices made for the clients and Ifa devotees.

It is also a celebration of an individual “Odu Ifa ” that is given to an individual priest to schedule his date and named the festival as the celebration of his/her own Odu ifa. For instance “Annual Iwori-bogbe Festival, Oyekutekuasa festival e.t.c.

Some people see the ifa festival to mean a combination of Ifa and other deity festivity.

Ifa festival requires steps before it could be done.These are the following steps:

 1 ) ORI BABA BIBO (MAKING OFFERING TO A CELEBRANTS FATHER AND FOREFATHERS) i.e Ancestors offerings and Spiritual rites where he-goat or Ram could be used as sacrificial material and others.

During this step we normally make offerings to Ogun(the god of iron)as well. either we make use of he -goat or Dog as sacrifice to Ogun. 

 2)IFA WIWE  (Gathering of all the Sacred ifa leaves(EWE IFA) .

  And sacred leaves are part of spiritual and prayerful cleansing of all Ikins in the Temple.

During this step we make offerings to all the IFAS(IFA BIBO) in the temple.Some of the Sacred leaves and other materials used are :

Ewe Rinrin

Ewe Tete

Ewe Odundun

Ewe Peregun

Ewe gbegi

Oti  (dry gin)

Oori (Shea butter)

Epo pupa (palmoil)

Igbin (Snail) 

 Eku

 Eja (dry fish)

We make use  of each leaf to consecrate Ifa with invocation 

3)OJO ODUN IFA (Ceremonial day) for people to come together in the temple to rejoice with the celebrant and different Cultural activities being carried out by babalawos and Olorisas i.e Ifa drama,ifa Cultural dance,IYERE IFA SISUN(ifa divinitional chants),

 4)DIDA IFA ORI ERAN;This is the last step of the festival where ifa will be fed with the heads of all the goats used during the offerings as well as the year’s divination or reading. 

As a matter of fact this year’s Ifa festival was so full of awesome sacred memories, blessings and magical moments. 

I as a Chief Ifa priest with many decades of experience still never cease to get amazed by the multi faceted display of Ifa power.

The yardstick of Orí is ORÍ INÚ (character), the ways of showing strong character are often not by traveling the easy path.Also if an individual’s character is bad,his or her choice of destiny may not be fulfilled according to odu ifa (ogbe yọnu).

What is Akosejaye or esentaye?
It is finding out about the destiny (ayanmo) with which the child has brought to the world.Consultation will be made with the Ifa priests to know what and what to bring to enhance their findings On the day of the divination.
The Ifa priests will not only find out about the destiny of the child, Stepping into the World. Life is a journey. The esentaye rites is also way to make sure your child makes the journey equipped with the proper knowledge and the blessing,learning your child’s spiritual identity, if he or she is descended from the maternal, paternal orisa (angel guardians)lineage, as well as recite the story of the child’s personal mythology. Esentaye also outlines the Transformative Work parents and community members must do to assure the child’s safe passage. Also to learning sustainable Practices that will minimize threats and maximize strengths in the child’s journey of life.
Ifa will delve into the kinds of food that the child should or should not eat when he or she grows up.
Findings will also be revealed from Ifa to the parents about the colours of cloths that the child should or should not wear when he or she grows up. Ifa will talk about the kind of works the child should or should not do when he or she grows up. Ifa talks about successes, failures, marriage, children and the places that the child will be during his or her lifetime.
Offering/Etutu with a natural materials e.g leaves,snails, sheabutter e.t.c must also be made about the negative things which the child would experience as ifa reveals in the course of growing up .
It is best to take a peek into the child’s destiny before the naming ceremony to have the clue of the name to be given the child.
Salt, honey, kola nuts, bitter kola,and non alcoholic wine will be used to pray for the child by the elders present at the naming ceremony. And showers of blessing in form of prayers will be rained on the child from the Ifa priests and the parents of the child. The odu Ifa revealed will be the guides for child throughout his/her lifetime.

IFA PALM TREE /NUTS (IKIN IFA ) AND THE ORIGINALITY

When Orunmila left Earth for Heaven,he left behind his spiritual self in the form of the sacred palm tree ,where we get the nuts called (ikin ifa ) today.
Palmnuts of ifa (Ikin ifa ) is quite different from ordinary palm nut called EKURO.
The ikin ifa tree is branched its nut has four eyes and more.
Ikin ifa tree is feared and respected
Before we can call the palm nuts an ikin ifa
It must have passed through alot of rites and invocations from babalawo
i.e it must be well consecrated.
And the ikin ifa can be used for a divination,as well as the part of the instruments used during ifa initiation ceremony .
Through divination Babalawo’s are both literally and figuratively in touch with orunmila and can access his knowledge of future events. not only can the Babalawo forcast the likely outcome of the event, but through communication with Orunmila by the use of (ikin ifa),he can prescribe the sacrifice necessary to assure favorable outcome.

A time to make a request to our ancestors and thanksgiving to them
A remembrance of the ORISA and a season to celebrate the ORISA where friends and kindred gathered together in feast

Orisa; literally “head guardians”), who are considered as ministers of Olodumare(God) and intermediaries between Olodumare(God) and humanity.
Those Orisas are;
Orunmila/ifa=god of divinity
Ogun= god of iron
Sango=god of thunder and lightning
Oya=goddess of the wind
Yemoja, the goddess of all rivers.
